Brain mapping was performed on children and adults of both sexes while they were solving addition, subtraction, multiplication and division problems.

Differences were found in the neural organization of the 4 groups, showing that adults required less neural computation compared to children and that male volunteers in both groups presented different neural organization compared to females.
